On March 25, 2025, the El Cajon City Council took a significant step in combating hate by unanimously adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's (IHRA) Working Definition of Antisemitism.(Read on East County Magazine)

The resolution, introduced by Mayor Bill Wells and Councilman Gary Kendrick, is intended to serve as a guiding tool for identifying and responding to antisemitic incidents. The IHRA definition will be used as an educational resource for city departments, including law enforcement.

Roughly 40 public speakers shared their views during the meeting. While the majority voiced support, a few raised concerns around free speech and criticism of Israel. In response, Councilman Kendrick emphasized the need for clarity and action, stating, ā€œThis hate must stop. This resolution is a small step in that process.ā€

By adopting the IHRA definition, El Cajon sends a clear message of zero tolerance for antisemitism and reinforces its commitment to protecting all members of the community.
